Say Hello to Soroptimist Member, Lois Taylor!

Meet Lois Taylor, a Proud Member of the North & West Vancouver Soroptimist Club

Lois is the longest-serving member of the North & West Vancouver chapter. We wanted to find out why she loves being a member!

Why did you become a Soroptimist member?

When I first moved to British Columbia, I started to miss my close circle of women friends. So when a co-worker invited me to a Soroptimist recruiting event, I thought—why not? I’m so glad I went.

That night, I listened to these amazing women talk about why they joined Soroptimist, what kept them involved, and the incredible work they were doing right in their own communities. Then they showed a video about the global impact of Soroptimist, and honestly, I was intrigued. I signed up with S.I. Vancouver right then and there.

But the real turning point? My first Western Canada Regional Conference in 1987. The energy, the connections, the shared purpose—it just clicked for me. That’s when I knew: I was in it for life.

What are the most valued skills you have learned?

Over the years, I’ve been reminded time and again just how powerful a group of women can be. When we come together, make a plan, roll up our sleeves, and dive into a challenge—there’s really nothing we can’t do.

Serving on the board of the Soroptimist Foundation of Canada also opened my eyes to the bigger picture. I got to see firsthand how the foundation helps amplify the work Soroptimist clubs are doing across the country, and it’s very inspiring.

Being a Soroptimist has only deepened my belief that the world would be in much better shape if more women had a seat at the tables where the big decisions are made—especially in government and politics. We bring important voices and perspectives that need to be heard.

How are you making a difference?

Being a Soroptimist has truly made me feel like I’m making a difference. Working alongside other incredible women in our club, we’ve been able to support women and girls in our community in so many meaningful ways.

For 75 years, our club has been part of the North Shore—offering educational grants, organizing family camp trips, sending out care packages, providing emergency funds, running clothing drives—you name it. Whatever the need, we show up with compassion and heart.

What’s also amazing is knowing I’m part of something even bigger. Soroptimist clubs around the world are making a global impact through all kinds of projects at the regional, federal, and international levels.

Seeing how millions of women and girls have benefited from this work—that’s what keeps me going. It’s what makes me proud to call myself a Soroptimist “lifer.”
